Ofsted success for Westborough Academy

Staff and pupils at Westborough Academy on Macdonald Avenue in Westcliff are celebrating following their recent Ofsted inspection on 13 and 14 February 2024. Westborough has been awarded ‘Good’ ratings across the board, with early years provision judged as ‘outstanding.’

This is a significant leap from their previous inspection in September 2021 where the school was judged to require improvement.

Inspectors commented very positively about what it is like to attend Westborough Academy. They said:

“Pupils enjoy attending school…They are enthusiastic and excited about their schoolwork, including confidently reading the books they receive.”

“Pupils treat each other with kindness and respect. They are polite, friendly and eager to converse with adults.”

“The school sets high aspirations for all pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).”

“In the early years, children develop curiosity and interest in the world around them. Children leave the early years very well prepared for the demands of Year 1.”

“Pupils gain a lot from outdoor learning.”

Headteacher Tonya Brook said:

“The Ofsted report reflects how we, as a team, work hard to provide exciting learning opportunities for our pupils and instil our school values of kindness, respect, determination, creativity, inspiration and teamwork to ensure we have high aspirations for all. We could not have achieved this without the support of our staff, pupils and school community. We are very pleased and proud of our school.”

The school is part of the South East Essex Academy Trust, which it joined in September 2021. Chief Executive Andrew Cooper commented:

“Since joining the trust, the school has rapidly improved the quality of education. As the report says, the school is fortunate to have some great teachers who show strong subject knowledge. It’s a school where great team work is on display every day.”
